Student Attendance Systems Help Dis-advantaged Children

Education Secretary Michael Gove has announced plans to give 12,000 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds £1,200 a year as an incentive to stay in school.

Synel Industries' leading biometric student attendance system, Edu-REG, helps schools ensure that this funding goes to the young people who really need it, and who really are committed to staying in education.

Gove's new scheme is a replacement of the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), which gave teenagers from low-income households a weekly cash allowance as an incentive to stay in school.  This old scheme was criticized for 'poorly targeting' funding to 45% of 16 - 19 year-olds in the education system.

Under Gove's new scheme, schools will be able to channel some of the funds to help pupils pay for travel and school supplies, such as books. Part of the £180 million budgeted for the plan is going directly to schools, who will be able to spend the money as they see fit.

Synel Industries’ biometric electronic registration technology guarantees that only pupils who are actually attending school receive this financial incentive.

This is where Synel’s products stand out from others on the market. There are many systems that require reliable personal recognition schemes to confirm or determine the identity of an individual that is requesting their services. This ensures that the services rendered are only accessed by a legitimate user, and not by an impostor. These kinds of applications include secure access to buildings, computer systems, laptops, and so on. Without robust personal recognition schemes, anyone can potentially access these system.

Biometric recognition, or, simply, biometrics, refers to the automatic recognition of individuals based on their physiological and/or behavioral characteristics. By using biometrics, it is possible to confirm or establish an individual's identity based on "who they are", rather than by "what they possess" (e.g., an ID card) or "what they remember" (e.g., a password).

Synel is a leading supplier of electronic attendance monitoring systems. With the Edu-REG electronic student registration system, Synel offers a wide range of solutions for schools, academies, colleges and universities at competitive prices.
