Turnstiles: High-Throughput Access, Accurate Headcount
Turnstiles from Synel are designed for environments where volume, hygiene, and safety all matter. Touchless entry options keep people moving without bottlenecks, enforce one-person-at-a-time access, and integrate directly with fire systems to ensure safe evacuation when it matters.
The reality today
Shift changes create chaos at entrances. Hundreds of workers arrive simultaneously and standard doors can’t handle the flow. Tailgating means your headcount is unreliable. In hygiene environments, every touched surface is a contamination risk. And when the fire alarm sounds, a locked turnstile becomes a barrier to survival.
The Solution
Turnstiles from Synel combine controlled physical entry with access logic and safety integration. Anti-passback enforces accurate headcount, touchless options reduce contamination risk, and fire panel integration ensures turnstiles fail safe during an emergency.
High-Throughput Entry
Process hundreds of workers at shift change without bottlenecks. Controlled flow, one person at a time.
Accurate Headcount
Anti-passback ensures every entry is logged accurately. Reliable data for mustering and payroll.
Touchless Options
RFID necklaces allow completely hands-free access. Critical for food production and hygiene zones.
Fire Safe
Fire panel integration unlocks turnstiles automatically. Fail-safe evacuation, never a barrier to escape.
Key Features
Everything you need, built in.
How Access Control Works
Secure your site with a straightforward setup and ongoing management.
Approach
Worker approaches turnstile wearing RFID necklace or presenting card/biometric.
Detect
Reader detects credential automatically—no touching required for RFID.
Verify
System checks permissions: security group, time zone, shift schedule, zone access.
Rotate
Turnstile rotates once for authorised entry. Anti-passback prevents second use.
Log
Entry logged to Synergy Access. Data feeds T&A, payroll, and mustering systems.

About Turnstiles
When hundreds of workers start a shift simultaneously, standard doors create bottlenecks. Turnstiles provide controlled, high-throughput entry—one person at a time, every entry logged. Synel provides the intelligence that makes turnstiles more than mechanical barriers: the logic that controls access, the integration with fire systems, and the data that powers emergency mustering.
Touchless RFID for Hygiene Environments
In food production and manufacturing, standard access methods create hygiene risks—fingerprint sensors, PIN pads, and door handles are all touch points. RFID necklaces solve this completely. Workers wear the tag around their neck and simply walk through—the reader detects automatically, the turnstile rotates, no touching required. Continuous flow without contamination.
The Brain: Synergy Access Logic
Turnstiles are mechanical gates until connected to Synergy Access. The software provides the intelligence: anti-passback prevents credentials being passed to others, ensuring accurate headcount. Shift enforcement denies entry outside scheduled hours. Zone control restricts specific turnstiles to staff with correct training credentials—only qualified personnel enter high-care areas.
Anti-Passback
The turnstile rotates once per valid signal—no passing credentials back to friends, no tailgating. This provides accurate headcount for safety logs and ensures your occupancy data is reliable. When fire wardens need to know exactly who's inside, the turnstile data is trustworthy because anti-passback enforced it at entry.
Fire Panel Integration
A locked turnstile is a death trap during a fire. Synel manages fail-safe protocols: turnstile controllers connect directly to the fire alarm. On activation, the system cuts power to turnstile solenoids—arms drop or rotate freely, allowing unimpeded evacuation. Safety first, always.
Emergency Mustering Data
Because turnstiles provide accurate count of exactly who entered, the Synergy Muster module generates instant roll calls of who's still inside. If your turnstile doesn't know who entered, your fire roll call is a guess. Turnstile data feeds directly into emergency mustering—reliable headcount when it matters most.
Multiple Reader Options
Synel's hybrid data capture fits various reader types into turnstile housings. RFID for speed and hygiene. Facial recognition via Suprema FaceStation for higher security with walk-through recognition. Card readers for standard access. QR codes for temporary contractors and visitors with one-time entry passes.
Zone Control
Different turnstiles control different zones. In food production, restrict high-care areas to staff with hygiene training credentials. In manufacturing, limit machine halls to qualified operators. The credential isn't just "allowed on site"—it specifies exactly which areas that person can enter.
More Than Security
A Synel turnstile talks to payroll, fire alarm, and rostering simultaneously. Entry data feeds Time & Attendance—clock in and access control in one action. Shift data enforces scheduling. Fire integration ensures safety. That's the difference between a commodity barrier and an integrated workforce management tool.

Access Control FAQs
Common questions about access control answered.
What is anti-passback?
Anti-passback prevents the same credential being used twice to enter without first exiting. This stops card sharing. An employee cannot swipe in then pass their card back to a colleague.
It ensures accurate headcount for safety and occupancy reporting, and is essential for reliable emergency mustering.
Anti-passback can be configured to apply permanently, during specific times, or on certain days.
How do turnstiles integrate with access control?
Synel provides the intelligence that makes turnstiles more than mechanical barriers. Our software controls access logic, anti-passback and shift enforcement.
Turnstiles connect to the fire panel for fail-safe evacuation. Arms drop automatically on alarm activation.
Entry data feeds both access control and time & attendance simultaneously, so clocking and door access happen in one action. Reader options include RFID, facial recognition, cards and QR codes for visitors.
Can access control integrate with fire alarm systems?
Yes. Synel access control systems connect directly to building fire panels via the Adam Link controller.
Upon alarm activation, the system automatically unlocks designated doors, gates and turnstiles. Power is cut to magnetic locks, ensuring they fail-safe (unlock) instantly.
The system also generates instant roll call reports showing who is on site, supporting fire safety compliance and speeding up evacuation accountability.
Can access control validate CSCS cards?
Yes. In construction environments, the system validates CSCS cards (skills cards) in real-time at turnstiles. If a card is expired or invalid, entry is denied automatically. The turnstile will not open.
This "no card, no entry" approach ensures only qualified workers access the site, meeting CDM Regulations and Building Safety Act requirements.
The validation creates a compliance log proving competence at point of entry.
Can employees use the same credential for both time & attendance and door access?
Yes. Synel's integrated platform allows a single credential to work across multiple systems. Whether employees use a card, fob, fingerprint or facial recognition, the same credential can be used to clock in and gain door access at the same time.
This means one system and one enrolment process, reducing complexity and lowering overall cost. It also creates a simpler, more consistent experience for employees.
If enabled, the same credential can also be used for cashless catering and secure print release.
